78 rooms and suites over 5 levels, facing south across the Esplanade to St Clair Beach. A restaurant, a bar, a saltwater bathhouse, 3 event rooms and a licensed gaming room, all under one roof, five kilometres from the centre of Dunedin.

The building went up in 1926 as a seafront pavilion and was a boarding house for most of the century after that. We took the shell, kept the brick and the sea-facing verandahs, and opened it as a hotel in 2009. The Albion Room is one room on the ground floor, open to guests and visitors aged 20 and over, on the premises only.

About Resort Scenery
A 78-room hotel at St Clair, on the southern edge of Dunedin — Ōtepoti in te reo. Brick at the base, timber above, 5 levels, and a south face that takes the weather straight off the Southern Ocean. The sea wall is forty metres from the front door.

Six of the 78 rooms are step-free with roll-in showers, and there is a lift to every level. The car park holds 84 vehicles behind the building, off Forbury Road, and one space per room comes with the rate.

One room on the ground floor, off the lobby, with a person on the door. 38 gaming machines along two walls and 7 tables in the middle — three blackjack, one roulette, one baccarat, one three-card poker and one that runs Texas Hold’em on Friday and Saturday evenings.

The Chart Room sits behind a second door: eight seats, higher limits, booked through the duty manager rather than walked into.

Open noon to 2.30am, seven days. Twenty and over, photo ID at the door every visit. On the premises only — nothing here is played over the internet.

The Beacon Room
Ninety-two seats, twenty-four of them along the sea-facing glass. Those twenty-four are requested at the time of booking, not on arrival. The kitchen writes a short menu and changes it about six times a year: Otago lamb, blue cod and groper landed at Careys Bay, Central Otago stone fruit in season, vegetables from the Taieri.

The wine list runs to 128 labels, 96 of them from Central Otago, North Otago and Waitaki. The Cargill Bar next door seats 44, keeps sixty New Zealand wines by the glass and four Dunedin taps, and lights the fire at four from April to October.

Breakfast 6.30–10am, lunch 12–2.30pm, dinner 5.30–9.30pm, seven days.

The Saltwater Bathhouse

Pools and treatment rooms
Two pools: a 20-metre lap pool indoors under a glass roof, and a smaller salt pool cut into the sheltered side of the terrace, held at 38 degrees. Both are filled from the mains and treated with salt rather than chlorine, and both are drained and refilled on Tuesday mornings. Four treatment rooms, three of them doubles, and a steam room.

Pools are open to house guests from 7am to 10pm and are in the room rate. Treatments start at 50 minutes and should be booked with the room, because there are four rooms and 78 bedrooms.
