Two pools, a steam room and four treatment rooms on level one, at the sheltered eastern end of the building. Both pools are filled from the mains and treated with salt rather than chlorine, and both are drained, scrubbed and refilled on Tuesday mornings between six and nine, when the bathhouse is shut.
Open 7am to 10pm to house guests, and included in every room rate. Treatments from 8am to 8pm, seven days.
Twenty metres indoors, and a hot pool outside
The indoor pool is 20 metres by 8, four lanes, held at 28 degrees, under a glass roof that faces the sea. Two lanes are roped for swimming lengths between 7 and 9 in the morning; after that the ropes come out.
The outdoor pool is smaller — 6 metres by 4 — cut into the terrace on the eastern side where the wall takes the southerly off it, and held at 38 degrees all year. It is open in rain, which in this suburb is the point of a hot pool.
Four rooms, three of them doubles
Four treatment rooms and six therapists on a rotation. There are four rooms and 78 bedrooms, so a treatment booked on the day is a matter of luck; booked with the room it is a matter of course.
Products are made in Central Otago and sold at the desk at the price the maker charges. Nobody here works on commission, so the therapist recommending something is doing it for the reason they said.
Cancellations inside four hours are charged at half. That is not a penalty so much as the only way a four-room bathhouse can hold a slot for you.
A day pass is NZ$45 and covers both pools and the steam room from 10am to 6pm, with a limit of twenty passes a day so that the pools do not become a public baths. Anyone booked for a treatment has pool access on the day at no extra charge.
Swimwear. Everything else is here: towels, robes, slippers, lockers with a key rather than a code, hairdryers, and a basket of the same products used in the treatment rooms. None of it costs anything and nothing is held against it.
Between 7 and 9 in the morning it is a lap pool and it sounds like one. From 9 until 6 it is mixed use. After 6 the lane ropes stay out, the lighting drops and the room is adults only until close at ten. If quiet matters, that last stretch is the one to aim for.
Step-free from the lift to the changing rooms and to both pools. One accessible changing room with a bench and a shower chair. The pool hoist takes 150 kg and is rigged on request rather than kept in place, so a phone call ahead means it is ready when you get there. More detail on the accessibility page.
Resort Scenery is a hotel and entertainment resort at St Clair in Dunedin, New Zealand.
